NOHP Puducherry - Mass tooth brushing program for school students

On April 11, 2025, GPS Veerampattinam, a government primary school, a mass tooth brushing program as part of World Oral Health Day celebrations, themed “A Happy Mouth is A Happy Mind was organized by the Mobile Dental Unit Team under the National Oral Health Programme, Government of Puducherry.  This initiative aimed to promote oral hygiene among children in underserved communities.
The program involved over 165 students, aged 3 to 10 years, who participated in a guided tooth brushing session. Dr. Kavipriya SNO NOHP, Dr. Suganthi, Dental surgeon NOHP from the mobile unit and its team demonstrated proper brushing techniques, stressing the need to brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes. Each child received a toothbrush, toothpaste, and an age-appropriate oral health guide. Interactive elements like demonstrations and a group brushing pledge ensured engagement and reinforced learning.
The initiative addresses a pressing public health gap. Mastering brushing techniques helps prevent cavities and gum disease, reducing pain, school absences, and low self-confidence. The program’s emphasis on the link between oral health and mental well-being aligns with the 2025 theme, showing children how healthy mouths enhance smiles, social interactions, and emotional resilience.
By bringing the Mobile Dental Unit team to GPS Veerampattinam, the National Oral Health Programme not only equips children with essential skills but also fosters habits that promote lifelong oral and overall health, paving the way for happier, healthier futures.
