ORAL HEALTH PROGRAM WITH HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS AT DARUL UKHWAH MUSLIM HIV SHELTER HOME

Campaign

In conjunction with World Oral Health Day on March 20th, 2024, the Department of Community Oral Health and Clinical Prevention at Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Dentistry conducted the 'SHINE Program' at the Darul Ukhwah Muslim HIV Shelter Home in Puchong, Selangor. This initiative aimed to emphasize the significance of oral healthcare for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV), and empower them to care for their mouth and teeth.

Interactive activities were conducted by the postgraduate students of the department to facilitate engagement and participation among residents. Through a hands-on station, residents learned proper brushing techniques and the importance of good oral hygiene practices. Another station equipped them with the skills to perform comprehensive mouth self-examinations for early detection of oral lesions. Additionally, caregivers received brief diet counselling to develop healthier food options for the shelter residents.

The closing ceremony of the program, which was graced by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dr. Zamri bin Radzi, culminated with the designation of two residents: one as an "Ikon Gigi" (Dental Icon) and another as an "Ikon SHINE."  This recognition served to further empower and promote oral health awareness among the residents. Overall, the SHINE Program provided a valuable opportunity to address disparities in oral healthcare access and ensure its availability to all individuals.
