The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, spearheaded a Community Oral Health Education and Screening Initiative on 06 January 2026. This outreach, hosted for the residents of Suryodaya Co-operative Housing Society in Vikhroli East, was conducted under the global banner of World Oral Health Day 2026, embracing the core message: “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life.”
Target Population
A diverse demographic of residents from Suryodaya Co-operative Housing Society, ranging from young adults to geriatric participants.
Number of Beneficiaries
89 residents successfully underwent clinical screening and received personalized oral health counselling.
Activities Conducted:
- Community Oral Health Education
- Oral Health Screening
Rationale
Optimal oral health is a fundamental pillar of systemic well-being and overall quality of life. In many urban community settings, individuals frequently overlook routine dental check-ups, seeking professional intervention only when pain or advanced symptoms occur. This leads to a high burden of preventable oral diseases. To bridge this gap, the Department of Public Health Dentistry launched this localized outreach program. The initiative sought to transition the community mindset from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, bringing diagnostic and educational services directly to the residents' doorstep.
Objectives
The primary goals of this program were to:
- Elevate community literacy regarding the link between oral and systemic health.
- Instill sustainable daily oral hygiene protocols among residents.
- Facilitate the early detection of pathologies through systematic chairside screening.
- Streamline the referral pathway for patients requiring advanced clinical management at tertiary centers.
Activities Conducted
The outreach strategy integrated clinical diagnostics with evidence-based health promotion:
1. Community Oral Health Education
The team conducted a dynamic, high-engagement seminar focusing on:
- The science of plaque control and daily hygiene maintenance.
- Tactile demonstrations of modified Bass brushing techniques.
- Nutritional counseling and the role of fermentable carbohydrates in caries development.
- The early warning signs of periodontal disease and dental decay.
- The critical necessity of bi-annual professional evaluations.
2. Oral Health Screening
A multidisciplinary dental team performed comprehensive intra-oral examinations for 89 participants to evaluate:
- Caries prevalence and restorative needs.
- Periodontal status and gingival health.
- Prosthetic requirements for partially or completely edentulous residents.
- Screening for oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and early mucosal lesions.
Residents identified with clinical needs were formally referred to the Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, ensuring continuity of care and specialized follow-up.
Impact
This initiative successfully mobilized 89 community members, fostering a culture of health consciousness within the society.
Key Outcomes:
- Enhanced Literacy: Participants demonstrated a clearer understanding of preventive measures and the impact of diet on dental longevity.
- Early Diagnosis: Identified several asymptomatic conditions, including early-stage decay and periodontal issues, before they reached a critical state.
- Behavioral Shift: Observed a marked increase in the residents' intent to prioritize regular dental visits and adopt recommended hygiene aids.
Conclusion
The “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life” campaign effectively translated global health goals into local action. By combining rigorous screening with empathetic education, the initiative empowered the Vikhroli East community to take ownership of their oral health journey.
