On the occasion of Maharashtra State Oral Health Day, observed on 5th February 2026 and in accordance to the ongoing World Oral Health Day 2026 campaign: “A Happy Mouth is… A Happy Life”, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai, organized a comprehensive oral health awareness and screening program at Ashiana Institute of Autism, Andheri East, Mumbai.

The program aimed to promote preventive oral healthcare and improve awareness regarding oral hygiene practices among children with special needs, particularly children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The initiative emphasized inclusive dental care, early diagnosis, and active parental involvement.

Target Population

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), along with their dedicated parents and educators.

Number of Beneficiaries

35 children received specialized screenings and sensory-friendly oral health education.

Objectives of the Program

  1. To create awareness about the importance of oral hygiene among children with special needs.
  2. To provide comprehensive pediatric oral health screening.
  3. To educate parents and caregivers about preventive dental practices.
  4. To encourage early identification and management of oral diseases.
  5. To promote inclusive and compassionate dental healthcare services.

Program Activities

1. Musical Skit on Oral Health Awareness

A creative and engaging musical skit was performed to educate children about good oral hygiene practices. Through songs, role play, and interactive demonstrations, the children were taught:

  • Proper toothbrushing techniques
  • Importance of brushing twice daily
  • Harmful effects of sugary foods
  • Importance of regular dental visits

The visual and auditory format of the skit helped children with unique learning needs grasp concepts effectively.

2. Interactive Oral Health Game

An engaging activity titled “Happy Tooth vs Unhealthy Tooth” was conducted.
Children participated in:

  • Identifying healthy and unhealthy food items
  • Understanding good and bad oral habits
  • Sorting activities with pictorial representations

This activity enhanced participation, improved understanding, and made learning enjoyable.

3. Comprehensive Pediatric Oral Health Screening

A detailed oral examination of the children was carried out by the faculty and team of the Department of Public Health Dentistry.

The screening included:

  • Examination for dental caries
  • Assessment of oral hygiene status
  • Evaluation for gingival problems
  • Identification of developmental anomalies

Individual findings were recorded, and referrals were advised wherever required for further treatment at Government Dental College & Hospital, Mumbai.

4. Parental Counselling and Guidance

Recognizing the crucial role of caregivers, a focused counselling session was conducted for parents and teachers. The session covered:

  • Modified brushing techniques for children with special needs
  • Use of adaptive toothbrushes and aids
  • Dietary counselling
  • Preventive measures such as fluoride application and sealants
  • Importance of routine dental check-ups

Interactive discussions addressed common challenges faced by parents in maintaining oral hygiene for children with autism.

Conclusion

The Maharashtra State Oral Health Day celebration at Ashiana Institute of Autism was a meaningful step toward inclusive oral healthcare. By combining education, screening, and parental empowerment, the Department of Public Health Dentistry reaffirmed its commitment to preventive dentistry and community service. The initiative successfully promoted the message that every child, regardless of ability, deserves a healthy smile and accessible dental care.
