Responding to the FDI initiative this year, with a theme of “Live Mouth Smart”, the World Oral Health Day was observed to spread awareness on the importance of oral health in maintaining overall health. The theme exemplifies the importance of Healthy mouth and Healthy talk for a much better society. FDI’s call has been taken up by us at SIBAR Institute of Dental Sciences, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh State, India, in association with Indian Dental Association – Coastal Andhra Branch.
Observing such an important day related to oral health in particular, the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences has organized week long campaign, by conducting Oral health awareness programs and teaching the importance of prevention of many oral diseases by maintaining good oral hygiene practices. This was done at the level of various Primary Municipal schools in the Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. More than 500 students up to the age 14 years were educated about the importance of Oral Health and its impact on general health. They were demonstrated with proper Brushing techniques and were also educated on maintenance of good Oral hygiene practices. Drawing and Essay writing competitions were also conducted for students at schools, with emphasis on Oral Health and its maintenance.
Dental camps were arranged throughout the week at places like orphanages, old age homes, schools and disadvantaged communities. A total of seven camps were organized and about 2000 people utilized the services in these camps. Dr. A.J. Sai Shankar, Dr. P. Srinivas, Dr. M. Sridhar, Dr. Sai Krishna, Dr. Pratap Goud, Dr. Hanisha, Dr. Dr. R. Srinivas, Dr. B. Vikram Simha, Dr. T. Devaki and other Postgraduate students from Departments of Pediatric Dentistry and Public Health Dentistry, attended the camps.
An oral health awareness rally was organized in Guntur city on 20th March, the World Oral Health Day. Dr. L. Krishna Prasad, the Dean and FDI Member for – Member Liaisons & Support committee, addressed the gathering and flagged off the rally. About 400 students and faculty participated in the rally. The participants displayed placards and distributed pamphlets on oral health promotion and disease prevention. The rally was organized in association with IDA. The rally was led by Dr. L.
